[03 May 2003|04:55am]

I've been wading my way through the quite long "Gilraen and Arwen" thread on HA, and *click* I'm in feminist mode again. Oh, this is not going to lessen my anger any. (It's been a very angry week...) Whee, and now my thoughts are muddled too.

I guess I'm mostly reacting to what looks like a "yay women being strong behind the scenes" kind of thing. Especially with Arwen. Can't say she's my favorite, mostly because I just can't get a good grasp of her from the books, and Liv Tyler... eek. I'm very much an Eowyn fan, and god! I need to write her. (I also need to quit drinking the plasticky tasting water. Gross.) I must! I must! I must write an Eowyn story. Don't know how it will go, though, and it might have to wait. Blarg. Perhaps I should get some sleep for now, eh?

The vagaries of genius authors [01 May 2003|12:32am]

[ mood | wakeful ]

Does anyone understand how in the name of heaven JRRT could have put Thorongil - who, if you've not read the books, is Aragorn - in Minas Tirith when Boromir was born, serving Boromir's grandfather, having spatty rivalries with Boromir's father, and almost unquestionably becoming acquainted with the toddler, and not have addressed that little bit of history anywhere as the Fellowship traveled together?

Is it just me, or is that extremely annoying?

Though, of course, it does give fanfic writers such as myself much good material to explore. Still. It seems unnecessarily churlish towards Boromir for his own author not to have mentioned that his would-be king probably babysat him.

Writing with your eyes closed [30 Apr 2003|10:51am]

[ mood | interested ]

So I've been thinking about this.

No, that's not right - I've been feeling my way through this.

I've been working on this AU, Undertow, which I've mentioned here and there, and it's very different from my other AU insofar as AETI is largely mapped out, and I have a fairly good idea where it's going and how it's going to get there.

With Undertow, however, I've just set up a situation, and now I'm writing it to see how it plays out. I know what I don't want to have happen, in broad strokes, but the details of it are as much a mystery to me as they are to the characters. We're all just trying to get through, the blind author leading the blind characters - though it feels like it's the other way around.

I have been interested to note that a certain amount of the time, I'm literally writing it with my eyes closed. A little tired (or a lot), because that's when my internal censor is mostly asleep, I'll sit there with the laptop, eyes closed, and feel my way along through a scene, typing as I go.

The typos are horrendous, of course, but usually not so bad that I can't figure out what I wrote when I open my eyes.

But what's most interesting to me about this process is the headspace I get into when I'm doing it. It's very much like the zone I used to get in the studio when I was an art student - strangely non-verbal, except of course words are coming out. But ... well, I see it in my mind, feel it in a sort of dreamlike way, and the only access that my verbal mind has to it is enough to take dictation.

I think it's one thing that keeps me coming back to the story.

Do you ever write with your eyes closed?

I'm Not Sleep Deprived or on Drugs, I Swears! [29 Apr 2003|01:26am]

So yesterday I was reading the bit in Unfinished Tales about the Istari. Then today I was thinking about Blue Wizards, and that somehow turned into Blue Fairy (from Pinocchio), and then the interesting mental images began. I seem to be collecting quite a cast of characters in my head, new as it is. First, Teleporno, correspondent in my inner dialogues (inspired by Celeborn's Quenyan name); then Dilandau the Gender Confused; and now Pallando the Transgendered Blue Wizard.

Perhaps eventually I shall have to write a story about Pallando, and how he came to be transgendered. But for now, I've got my not-exactly-slashy Frodo/Sam story in the works.

[ mood | surreal ]

So I just glanced up and saw an ad for Matrix: Reloaded, and there were about four thousand Elronds in black suits and sunglasses on the screen. Eeek! And has anyone else had the strangely surreal (or possibly just unacceptable) notion that the Twins in White Leather in Matrix: Reloaded must be ...

No, no.... No, that's just silly.

Oh, heck yes on the lusting! If the lusting gets too lusty one might consider putting it behind a cut-tag with a wee warning, but I'm all about some lusting. :)

And heck yes on The Silmarillion too! The more of those I read, the more it becomes clear that I really must read the text. So yeah, the more the merrier. Yay!

Hello! First it was Silmfics, and now it seems like HA will be going LJ. *g*

Anywho, I'm assuming this is going to be a place for lusting. Am I right, Rachel? ;)

But erm, could we be open to The Silmarillion, too? :)

Toying at our leisure [26 Apr 2003|11:25pm]

[ mood | befuddled ]

Welcome! This here is an experiment in collective journaling. I have no idea what's going to happen here. Clearly, though, there'll be some toying going on. My thought is that we could perhaps use it as a place to stick vignettes we don't know what else to do with, or possibly interact in just a different way from the way we interact at HASA. I've set it up as an open membership community, which means anyone can join but only members can post. If you'd like to join, please do! As for rules, well, I've not even considered the question, but we're a fairly well-behaved bunch, and I suspect the odds of getting party-crashers is slim. So, join up, drop a note, and someone please give me a list of "interests" I should add. It's late, and I'm pooped, so my own obsessions have held sway - so far our only interests are "aragorn, arnor, boromir, denethor, dol amroth, eomer, eowyn, fanfiction, faramir, gondor, imrahil, lord of the rings, middle-earth" and I know there's more than that.

So, come on in! The water's fine. :)
